How to Service Sliding Aluminum Windows

Servicing a sliding aluminum window can enhance its function, reduce drafts, and ensure it opens, closes, and locks smoothly. Here are the general steps involved with servicing an aluminum sliding window:

Clean the Windows and Tracks

Open the windows as much as possible and, if they feature removable sashes, remove them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. With a vacuum equipped with a brush attachment and brush nozzle attachments, clean out tracks and window frame tracks of any dirt and debris build-up for best results.
Clean the track and frame using warm, soapy water mixed with a soft brush or cloth and warm, soapy water (vinegar-water solutions may also work), followed by rinsing with clean water before drying with another clean cloth to ensure no soapy residue remains to attract dirt.
Clean the window glass using glass cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar, wiping dry with a lint-free cloth or squeegeeing to avoid streaks.

Lubricate Track and Rollers as necessary

After cleaning, apply silicone-based lubricant to the roller wheels and track. This lubricant won’t attract dirt like oil-based products might, and can easily be spread around by moving the sliding sash back and forth to distribute evenly.

Adjust the Rollers

If your window is sticking or not sliding smoothly, adjusting its rollers may be necessary. Look for screws at the bottom edge of its frame containing adjustment screws – these can often be reached from within your home.
Adjust the window with a screwdriver using an adjustment screw and turn clockwise until your window raises; turn counterclockwise to lower it, until it moves smoothly and closes tightly.

Wash and replace weather stripping

Check the condition of weather stripping around windows to make sure it provides an effective seal against drafts. To replace weather stripping, carefully unhook and uninstall old material before cleaning the area where they were attached.
Measure and cut new weather stripping to fit, then press it or adhere it to the window frame according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Inspect, Repair, or Replace Locks

Check that the locking mechanism is functioning as intended, especially if it appears loose or does not latch securely. In such a situation, adjustments or replacement may be necessary. To adjust a lock, loosen screws and move them slightly before tightening them back up again before testing your lock again.
If the lock is damaged, take steps to replace its entire locking mechanism with one that fits its size and type perfectly. Furthermore, check for leaks or sealant issues with sealants that have already been installed before replacing any parts.

Search your window carefully for air leakage around its frame.

If gaps exist, seal them off using exterior-grade silicone caulk. After servicing your sliding aluminum window, it should open and close more smoothly, lock securely, and be free from drafts – regular maintenance can extend its lifespan while improving its performance. However, should any issues persist after servicing, or it still doesn’t function correctly, consulting a professional may be in order.
